I also have prior professional experiences in the fields of Gerontology and Health Promotion. On a personal note, I have a lived experience with immigration and an understanding of the inherent challenges in navigating different value systems and in balancing the individual with the collective. As a result, I have come to believe that the relationships, communities, and larger systems we are part of, speak to “why” and “how” we need to heal and grow.

My journey to becoming a Registered Psychotherapist began through my own personal navigation of mental health challenges and the gratitude that I held, and continue to hold, for the positive therapeutic experiences I encountered in my life. I believe that therapy should be a safe space, free of judgement where clients can express their feelings, attitudes, opinions and experiences. I aim to create this space through ongoing informed consent, transparency, genuineness and at times - humour.

My path to becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) began with an undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Toronto. Through courses like neuroscience and psychology, I became fascinated with the human mind and psyche and I was particularly drawn to the incredible resilience of the human brain and its ability to recover and form new connections. This led me to pursue another major in psychology, where I learned about the efficacy of talk therapy. This knowledge coupled with my interest in helping others led me to studying psychotherapy in the Couple and Family Therapy program at the University of Guelph. Within this work, I position myself as a family therapist. When supporting individuals, couples, and families, I place importance on interpersonal relationships. I view many presenting concerns through a systemic perspective, which means that I consider how they may be connected to relationships with others and to broader systems. However, I also see immense importance in examining our relationships with ourselves and finding ways to accept and love ourselves for who we are, while working towards who we want to become.

As a family therapist who occupies a systemic lens, I attune to injustices and aim to advocate for and empower clients who may feel otherwise disempowered or unheard. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was an essential worker who worked every day during the crisis and was directly involved in the rollout of additional services to clients and staff during the most severe parts of the pandemic.

I have continued to grow in my concern for families and couples by becoming a Gottman Therapist. Psychologist and Researcher Dr. John Gottman’s work is scientifically evidence-based and proven effective with couples in conflict or transition due to extra-marital affairs, separation, and divorce. I did additional training in 2015 to become a Supervisor with CRPO. I have supervised CRPO candidates completing their practice hours for certification with the College of Registered Psychotherapists.

To stay healthy and safe, I practice daily prayer and meditation as I assist others. I maintain physical health by attending yoga classes and walking on the trail or the beach by the lake. I have always been curious about people and how they relate to one another. Throughout my journey, I was always the friend who others would come to for advice, which drew me to the field of psychotherapy. I believe therapy can be a fundamental tool for taking care of one’s mental health, and I believe my character and interests help support clients through this journey. My primary goal is to create a supportive therapeutic environment for clients to help gain fresh insights and achieve growth and change in their lives. My approach as a therapist is centered in transparency, authenticity, and directiveness.

My professional journey began in 2004 when I received my certificate in psychoanalysis and began working as a therapist in Iran. In 2013 I immigrated to Canada, where I received both my honours and master’s degree in Psychology. I am currently working towards my PhD at York University, where my research focuses on identity issues/crises in social media and Metaverse.

My approach in therapy involves the process of understanding, learning and growth. I believe we need to first understand the base of the problem, before exploring any opportunities for solutions. Sometimes the problem is rooted in cognitive or logical biases, which may require a solution-focused approach like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Other times, emotion-focused approaches, like Gestalt and Emotion-Focused Therapy are helpful for supporting clients in accessing their feelings and acknowledging emotional roots to issues. Having spent nearly a decade working in social services, first as an anti-violence advocate, and then a Registered Psychotherapist, I have witnessed the capacity we hold to heal and grow as individuals and families. I began my career working with survivors of sexual violence where I came to understand how committed we are as humans to survive and to find solace. Even in the darkest of moments I have watched countless people make meaning of their lives, narrate their suffering and overcome severe loss and trauma with a sense of empowerment. There are no ways to curtail grief, but we can live through it while creating change. I know this both through my work and through my own lived experiences. Our grief can shape us, and in therapy, we can work to influence how grief shapes us and how we respond to life’s most trying moments.

As a therapist, I use a client-centered, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive lens when working with clients. I am trained in various modalities including EMDR, Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Collaborative Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Most recently, I have been learning more about Internal Family Systems, Gottman’s Couple Therapy and somatic approaches to healing trauma. My formal education includes a Masters of Arts in Child & Youth Care from the University of Victoria, and a Masters of Science in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph. I believe therapy should provide a safe, non-judgmental, space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences while reconnecting with the values, goals, and relationships that align with their true, authentic selves. Change can be both frightening and uncomfortable. I appreciate and celebrate the strength it takes to lean into that discomfort on your healing journey.

My journey to becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) began in middle school, as a peer mediator. I pursued my studies at George Brown College in the Assaulted Women and Children’s Counsellor/Advocate Program. I then studied at the University of Toronto obtaining a degree in Mental Health Studies where my research focused on children’s experiences of anxiety, and how attachment styles impact romantic relationships. I obtained my Grief and Bereavement Counselling Certification prior to my Master’s in Couple & Family Therapy at the University of Guelph, where my research focused on forgiveness in couples and families, perinatal loss, and self compassion.

My approach to therapy is client-centered and grounded in the belief that everyone deserves to share their stories with someone offering empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard. I work from a collaborative, strength-based perspective. This approach means that I believe that every client is the expert in their life, and that it is my job to be genuinely curious in helping you to recognize the skills, talents, and resources you carry, while helping you to find meaning in your experiences. My work is also grounded in systemic, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive frameworks, which means that I am curious about the systems, relationships, and narratives that impact you and shape your experience, while exploring how you navigate systems of power and privilege. I also like to laugh a lot and highly value humour as a therapeutic tool.

I work with individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds navigating a variety of experiences including anxiety and stress, grief and loss, depression, life transitions, relationship conflicts, chronic illness, confidence and self-esteem, intimacy and sexuality, and LGBTQ2IA+. Currently my work incorporates several therapeutic modalities including Dialogic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, as well as other systemic and strengths-based approaches.

As a therapist I have come to know that compassion, both to ourselves and to others, can be a powerful tool in discerning our preferred ways of being, and in creating the life we want for ourselves - especially during a pandemic. I view therapy as a safe space to explore the emotions, thoughts, challenges, and hopes of your internal experience, as well as the relationships and other contextual aspects influencing your life. I believe that with a stronger understanding of ourselves, we can recognize the ways in which our experiences impact us. This deepened awareness can help us to access our most authentic selves and cultivate meaning within our lives.

My journey to becoming a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) began early in life as I navigated my own mental health challenges. Inspired by the support I received, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a minor in Family and Child Studies from the University of Guelph. I continued my academic journey at the University of Guelph, where I completed a Master of Science degree in Couple of Family Therapy. During this time, I became well-versed in Narrative, Solution Focused, Dialogic and Emotion focused therapies and have begun supplemental training in Gottman’s Couple Therapy. During my graduate studies, my research focused on addressing adolescent self-injury through family therapy. As a therapist, I am committed to continuing to expand my knowledge, scope of competency, and areas of focus through personal and professional development.

My approach to therapy is rooted in compassion, understanding and a strong belief in the strength and resiliency you possess. I believe that your story is unique and that you are the expert of your life. I strive to work collaboratively with you to facilitate a richer understanding of yourself and to create hopes and goals aligned with your values. My hope is that our sessions help develop newfound perspectives to help navigate the obstacles and negative patterns you may be experiencing.

I hold a systemic perspective, meaning that I consider the ways in which overarching ideas in society and dynamics of power and privilege impact your experience. Within this perspective, I am also interested in understanding your impact on the relationships you have with others and how these relationships influence your sense of wellbeing. Understanding the contextual aspects of your life, helps us to create a holistic and individualized approach in sessions.

As a therapist, I also know the value of self-compassion and I try to prioritize this in my own life. You may be coming to therapy because you’re feeling stuck and exhausted. You know that you could feel more fulfilled but you’re not sure how to move forward. You may be worrying all the time, or feeling like your energy is depleted. You may be struggling to manage daily tasks, or not be feeling great about yourself. You may have a sense that life should feel different, that you should have a sense of meaning or purpose, but you’re scared of failing or feeling misunderstood. I know what this feels like, and if you’re willing, I can help guide you through it.

My own childhood and adolescence was difficult as I battled against undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, depression and OCD. I was also experiencing abuse and struggling to accept my sexuality in a limiting religious environment. I developed many coping mechanisms during this time, many of them unhealthy. When I started to willingly participate in my own healing, my life changed. It was as if I had been fighting to tread water for years and finally someone was throwing me a life raft.

I became educated, set achievable goals, learned how my past was impacting my present, recognized unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, healed my nervous system, and took accountability for myself and my life. My healing journey eventually led me to graduate school where I studied psychotherapy and spiritual care. Being a therapist and guiding others through their own healing journeys is my purpose, my calling, and my joy.

My therapeutic approach is guided by the principles of trust, safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. I draw heavily on psychodynamic, narrative and solution focused approaches. In therapy, we will engage in reflection on how your past experiences impact your present thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By externalizing any challenges, we can gain a different perspective, helping you to feel empowered as you take control of your own story. I also offer clients actionable strategies to help support emotion and nervous system regulation. While I support clients navigating a range of experiences, I am passionate about exploring spirituality, identity, and religious trauma. Prioritizing my own mental and spiritual wellbeing has been transformative for me. I believe that healing begins with safety and support. My journey to becoming a psychotherapist began with my own struggles through trauma, mental health, and addiction. It was through my experiences of recovery and healing, that I discovered the healing power of relationships.

I have always been drawn to connecting with and supporting others. I completed a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Biological and Medical Sciences, with the intention of exploring the field of medicine. My educational background provided a strong understanding of the human body, and the connection between physical, mental, and relational wellbeing. My own healing experiences led me to pursue an Addiction Care Worker diploma, where I gained a deeper understanding of trauma, adversity, coping and resiliency. My own curiosity and desire to provide comprehensive care for my clients has motivated me to enrich my education and training in the areas of trauma, emotions, and relationships.

I have experience supporting youth and adults navigate anxiety, stress, relationship issues, interpersonal conflict, depression, panic, grief, trauma, body image, confidence, self-esteem and cultural and racial identity. I am particularly familiar with the unique challenges that come with the transitional time of being a student and young adult as I was a student myself and my psychotherapy practicum was completed in a university counselling setting.

Life happens and often times, our mental health is left behind. That is why I believe it is important to extend kindness to ourselves and treat ourselves how we treat our loved ones; with kindness, respect, compassion and love. I personally practice self-compassion and incorporate aspects of this into therapy when appropriate. I take care of my mental health through meditation, exercise, journaling and connection with nature. With over 30 years of experience working in the mental health field I have never lost my passion for helping those struggling with mental health or addiction issues. My approach to therapy is client centred, meaning that my client’s voice, needs and preferences always guide our sessions. I approach each client with the acceptance and respect that they deserve and never come from a place of judgement. It is my priority to provide a calm and safe space where clients feel comfortable to openly express their thoughts or concerns and to be their authentic selves. I was initially drawn to the field of mental health after growing up with a mentally ill family member and witnessing the impact that their illness had on their life and the lives of family members. I have supported my daughter through mental health and addiction issues and have also dealt with my own mental health struggles related to anxiety and depression. These personal experiences have provided me with unique insight and understanding of what those living with mental health issues must cope with and manage.

I began my career in psychiatric nursing and have worked in both community and clinical settings. While working on the mental health unit at my local hospital, I witnessed the impact that loss of autonomy had on patients. This experience continues to impact my approach with my clients and reinforced my belief that clients should always feel heard and have a sense of control in our sessions. Working within a hospital setting provided me with the opportunity to collaborate with doctors and psychiatrists, while advocating for patients. I left with a strong understanding of the symptoms of psychiatric disorders along with treatment strategies, including medication. Within my current role as a psychotherapist, I understand how overwhelming the medical system can be and am able to provide support to clients navigating these settings.

I carry a vast amount of experience supporting youth, either through individual sessions, group therapy or through my years of outreach in high school settings. I also hold a passion for working with LGBTQ+ folks and have had the privilege of supporting many transgender clients through their transition including coming out, hormonal therapy, surgery and adapting to living as their authentic selves in the world.

I am trained and experienced in many therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (SBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness and trauma therapy, including EMDR.
